Meteorite Sikhote-Alin

meteorite Sikhote-Alin

How could the Sikhote-Alin Siberians feel in the first half of February 1947 observing the greatest meteorite impact? The iron cosmic body, according to some estimates, had a weight up to 100 tons (!) exploded at the height of fewer than six kilometers above the Earth's surface. The explosion that followed the extreme light and was accompanied by a heavy shock, could be heard in London. It has happened only two years after the dropping of atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, so many local people when watching this unusual phenomenon, were seriously scared of a similar attack.

The Meteorite itself shattered into small pieces to the small one-mile region, from where it was soon possible to collect them. Also thanks to it, rare fragments of the meteorite from the Sikhote-Alin area can be found in our offer. In addition to the meteorites from the above-mentioned Siberian area, you can also find stones from other important localities of impacts. Let's take a look at some of them.

A meteorite with an estimated age of 4500 years, discovered in 1576 in the area approximately 1000 km far from today's Buenos Aires (Argentina) is called Campo-del-Cielo. The name means to "Heavenly Field," according to the area covered with craters, some tens to hundreds of meters large in diameter, created by the impact of this iron meteorite.

After discovering of this deposite by Argentine Army, it sank for long years into oblivion, because of speculations that it is just remains of an iron mine, even though that found samples were often described as unusually clean. Meteorite Muonionalusta

meteorite Muonionalusta

Approximately one million years ago is dated the impact of the meteorite called Muonionalusta on the northern part of Sweden behind the Arctic Circle. The first mention about this meteorite was in 1906 and only four years later was named after the nearby Muon River. With its age of 4.5 billion years, it is considered to be the oldest discovered meteorite on Earth.

You will undoubtedly agree with the statement that Muonionalusta is a beautiful kind of meteorite, mainly because of the Thomson structure as this creation is called, sometimes also called the Widmanstatten patterns. Such unusual beautiful pattern is caused by etching of a meteorite cut with nitric acid. The jewels made of this stone are thus striking and give the impression of magical appearance. Muonionalusta also bears the name of a cosmic body of the mentioned area, exhibited in the National Museum. With its weight of almost one ton is considered as the largest meteorite in the territory of the Czech Republic. The rarity and rising value of meteorites from this Swedish location are also the results of the fact that most of the parts have already been found in hard-to-reach terrain and are thus, among other things, a good investment.
