Obsidian

snowflake obsidianObsidian, or the black stone of hell, is actually a volcanic glass that was created by quick chilling of the very hot lava in the water on the surface of the Earth. The springing lava cooled so quickly could not crystallize, so the obsidian is not crystalline, and sometimes a very thin strip of obsidian might also arise. Due to this property, the obsidian could also occur in a relatively thin and sharp structure, whose sharp breakage suggests that obsidian was often used as a cutting tool, just like a flint.

The evidence is the findings of obsidian knives and spikes in America or Mexico where they date into such a mature culture of the Mayans and the Aztecs who believed that the use of obsidian in rituals is a man capable of taking the strength and protection of this precious stone.

Obsidian and its locations

The name obsidian is originally from the name of Roman Obsius, which the obsidian discovered in Ethiopia. That is evidenced by the finds of primitive tools in the excavation sites of prehistoric settlements.

Obsidian has multiple types and colors that depend on the compounds and influence the formation of this volcanic glass. Ferric admixture, hematite stains mahogany obsidian into brown, due to an influence of silicon dioxide converted at high temperature to cristobalite, creating obsidian with white spots called flaky obsidian. The rainbow effects that create bubbles of gas between the individual cooling layers of the lava create a rainbow obsidian or rain obsidian. Dark black obsidians coming from America or Mexico are called Apaches tears.
