Ruby

rubyRuby has a beautiful red color, that can have lots of exciting shades from red with a tinge of raspberries, wine, up to the color of pigeon blood. We could describe the red color of rubies endlessly, because sometimes they have a tinge rather in pink, sometimes a little violet.

The red color is caused by the admixtures of chromium that colors these precious stones at the time of their creation.

Indeed, color was an essential factor in naming this stone, whose name comes from the Latin word Ruber, which means red.

Ruby shows us its inner glow after grinding, in the form of crystals or smooth stones it is rather matte.

Rubies, precious stones

Rubies are shiny gemstones with beautiful brilliance and, like the rest of corundums, are often embodied in jewelry. Corundum is a species of precious stones, which are mostly sapphires that have lots of exciting color shades, except red. Rubies, in spite of their high hardness, are cut into diamond cuts. At Mohs's scale of mineral hardness is in the 9th place, harder is just a diamond. Rubies often include Rutile's so-called silk inclusions that should not be used for ruby jewels, but in case of the authenticity of ruby, this is perceived as proof. Indeed, the top-class rubies do not have these inclusions. The ruby quality is judged by color, brilliance or clarity, weights measured in carats and cut. Top-class ruby can be as well valued as diamonds.

ruby natural crystal

The flat crystal of ruby on the left comes from Africa, namely Madagascar, and in some parts of the crystal, there is a gentle crystal coloration with a tinge of purple to bluish. The flat crystals on the right are from India, and at a glance contain a large number of inclusions.

Ruby's crystals are matt. It is only after processing that the gloss appears progressively, as shown in the picture below on the tumbled rubies. The perfect glow has ruby only after cutting into a diamond cut because the rays of light passing through the cut ruby only show its brilliance and glow. Cut ruby is embedded in precious metals such as silver (Ag 925/1000) to make beautiful jewelry.
